Smardt-PowerPax’s water-cooled Chillers are amongst the simplest yet most efficient chillers on the market in the mid-size capacity range. This is achieved through the combination of our highly efficient flooded evaporator, shell and tube condenser, integrated controls and the revolutionary Danfoss Turbocor oil-free centrifugal compressor.
The simplicity of design found in the Smardt-Powerpax chiller stems from the fundamental benefits of utilising oil-free, magnetic bearing centrifugal compressor technology. As the compressors do not require oil, Smardt-PowerPax has removed oil from the equation in our chiller design. Many of the components of traditional chiller designs are no longer required, as there is no longer any need to regulate the location or the temperature of the oil within the system. In addition, our electronic expansion valves, coupled with our integrated controller allows us to take full advantage of cooler weather conditions through reduced condensing pressures, resulting in even greater energy savings.
Another advantage offered by the design is a reduction in the rate of service. History has shown that about 60% of all service or breakdowns on chillers are due to oil-related problems, something which has been eliminated on our chillers. Through the elimination of mechanical wear within the compressor, the requirements for servicing based on usage has also been reduced considerably. Smardt-Powerpax’s highly efficient flooded evaporators operate using ozone friendly R134a, and they are designed for ease of cleaning and will not suffer from energy robbing performance degradation due to oil contamination as seen in other chillers.
All condensers are of cleanable shell and tube type, designed for minimum condensing temperatures, and along with our evaporator design, come with ASME or AS1210 approval. We offer a choice of construction materials such as SS316 or cupro nickel and can custom design chillers when required.
Smardt’s water-cooled chiller range – 200 kW through 8150 kW – is designed for a 30-year operating life, with lifetime operating costs the lowest in the market.
No oil, flooded shell-and-tube evaporation, low power consumption, low maintenance costs (even lower with remote monitoring) and high reliability with only one main moving part.
Smardt and PowerPax work hard to achieve simplicity of design and operation – reflected in low operating costs, and supported by the integration of PowerPax electronic expansion valves and the optional use of load balancing valves at very low loads.
Field reliability since 2002’s introduction has been outstanding – not surprising when you consider that some 80% of all chiller problems in the field are due to failures in compressor oil return. And these Smardt chillers use no oil.
The growing fraternity of Turbocor-trained engineers and technicians suggests that total maintenance costs for oil-free chillers run at well under half the costs of traditional lubricated chillers. This assessment may be very conservative.
Always important in minimizing operating costs, service access is swift and simple, as is access to operating history through remote monitoring. Operating history, compressor and chiller set points are all accessible remotely by trained and authorized service personnel.
Integration through MODBUS with building management systems is standard, as is connectivity with most industry-standard protocols.
Custom design and production capacity
The group’s design engineers are happy to resolve special equipment design challenges for you, but please allow some extra time and, possibly, some extra cost for these.
High-efficiency direct expansion condensing units, heat recovery and free cooling applications can all be supplied competitively, as can special materials for use in aggressive environments.
Marine water boxes, corrosion protection and other options are available and can be explored on request.
Use of multiple compressors allows unusual redundancy safeguards; however, if multiple circuits are indicated, these can be designed in and supplied.
